San Jose Pachul is an amazing home set on 12.97 hectares (32 acres) just 45 minutes west of the colonial city of Merida, and only 30 minutes from Merida’s international airport. The owners have taken what had been abandoned remains of the outbuildings of an hacienda and turned them into a private and comfortable sanctuary of modernism surrounded by manicured tropical gardens.
The main structure houses a large living and dining room with soaring ceilings, perfect for gatherings of friends and family. Light and airy, it is the heart of the complex. From here one enters the elegant lounge/bar, which is also tall and impressive while smaller and more intimate than the main living space. Next to the bar is a large and fully functional restaurant-style kitchen and large pantry, with professional grade appliances and a great layout.
There are two stellar suites, one with a very colonial old-world style, and the other quite modern in feel and function. Both feature huge and luxurious accommodations with sitting room areas and large indoor-outdoor bathrooms and private courtyards attached. There’s a third bedroom suite as well that is very private.
The swimming pool is the former water reservoir for the hacienda and now it is one of the focal points. Being raised slightly it is perfect for taking in the views of the property and enjoying the tropical breezes and sunshine. Along with the swimming pool, the banquette and long outdoor rooftop bar just beg you to throw a great party for all your favorite people, with plenty of room for everyone.
Every part of this special property has been designed to be relaxing, and there are colorful architectural surprises around every corner. There is obviously room to add any more buildings you may wish to, and unlike most hacienda properties, there is no village of workers’ housing adjacent; all is concealed far from the road and the whole complex is a quiet and peaceful oasis.
